Should Your Auto Insurance Pay for Your Medical Bills?

Should your auto insurance pay for your medical bills? While this is a largely philosophical question that is open to a lot of debate, most of the time it’s all a matter of that fine print.

When you first purchase an auto insurance policy, you will receive a number of documents outlining what you are, and are not, covered for. Rather than stashing this paperwork in a drawer, take the time to read through it…completely. Boring? Yes. Important? You bet. You see, somewhere in all of those fine sentences and complex terms is an agreement that you have signed. Once you sign this agreement, you can’t go back and change your mind. What does any of this have to do with the question: should your auto insurance pay for your medical bills? Well, if you are currently in a tight position regarding an accident and medical bills, it has a lot to do with it.

First of all, ask yourself whether or not the accident was your fault. If you were driving under the influence, running a red light, or doing some other sort of illegal action, the accident in question is your fault (unless you find a really good attorney). Why does this matter? In the eyes of most insurance companies (and medical companies too), if you did something wrong, you have to face the consequences. In short, you have to pay those medical bills. Now, let’s consider another scenario: what if the car accident in question was truly an accident? Will your medical or car insurance company pay for your bills in this case?

Again, that depends upon your policy. Most policies only include partial payment. However, some policies are better than others, and these policies may include a larger payment. Don’t forget, if you are claiming some type of medical injury, you can expect an insurance investigator to visit you. Additionally, you can expect that same investigator to track your every move…even if you don’t know that they are there. The reason for this is that a lot of people make false medical claims. If your case is entirely legitimate, then you have nothing to worry about…but you will probably still wind up paying some of those bills. So, should your auto insurance pay for your medical bills? Well, in theory, yes.

If you have just been in an accident, the best way to get your questions answered is to contact your insurance sales representative. Don’t be afraid to ask a number of questions in order to find the answers that you need. The representative that you contact should be able to go over your policy in detail without any trouble at all. This way, you can find out for sure whether or not your medical bills will be paid. Either way, you can expect this process to be a rather long one.

Should your auto insurance pay for your medical bills? Some people think that all of their bills should be paid, but this depends upon the policy that you chose to begin with. If you take the time to find a great policy, you shouldn’t have to worry when you need to have your insurance company behind you. If not…you could be waiting a long time to have your case settled.
